Mr. Liu kicked off the symposium by extending a warm welcome to the new teachers and introducing them one by one. The new teachers then elaborated their teaching and research plans, and also pinpointed their shortcomings. Ma Xianrui, the representative of outstanding young teachers, shared his experience of research and teaching. Mr. Ma believes that academic researcher should avoid impatient and be devoted to their own academic fronts. They should focus on the hot issues without blindly “following the trend”. They should carefully write papers and project proposals diligently in order to make gains in their respective fields.
His remarks were followed by a vibrant discussion among the new teachers, most of whom think that they have issues in time management and course planning. Also, they should reflect on how to better deal with the relationship between research and teaching.
Deputy Dean Hu Zixiang pointed out the importance of the three-year period after doctoral graduation, and how important it is to seize the opportunity to apply for projects and publish articles. Deputy Dean Li Xueyong talked about the need to devote oneself into teaching, and how to combine scientific research with teaching research. He stressed that new teachers should be rigorous and serious about teaching, and actively participated in teaching competitions to perfect their skills. Liu Zhanxiang, Secretary of the CPC Committee of the School, thinks that all new teachers, who underwent the identity change from doctoral students to university teachers, face new challenge. He sincerely hopes that they can mature as soon as possible and do their best to tap into their potential. At the same time, he assured the teachers that the School will spare no effort in providing them with the support they need. Last but not least, Lin Bohai, Dean of the School, delivered a speech, recalling his personal experience in Tsinghua University and Southwest Jiaotong University. He also believes that three years after doctoral graduation is the golden period for scientific research, and new teachers must invest energy and make great efforts to produce results as soon as possible. At the same time, he said that all the new teachers are going through the transition of roles in life, so the School will do its best to help them through such period. He encouraged the new teachers to establish their own goals, find motivation, identify tasks, turn pressure into persistence and efficiency, and hopes that all teachers will “find their own place in teaching and scientific research, achieve their goals and carry on the legacy of the School”.
The symposium ended on a harmonious and successful note.
